Pirates take down Cowboys

Pirates take down Cowboys
ABILENE, Texas – Southwestern dominated the middle innings to defeat Hardin-Simmons 9-3 on Tuesday evening at Hunter Field in non-conference action.

HSU had jumped to a 2-0 lead with back-to-back home runs by Colson Craddick and Elijah Perez in the second inning, but starting pitcher Brett Marcom settled in and became almost untouchable on the mound the rest of the way.

Southwestern answered with a Robert Wehman RBI single in the third and took the lead with seven runs on just four hits in the fifth. HSU's Peables came on in relief of starter Mike Richardson for the Cowboys and walked in a pair of runs, then a Caleb Jacques error extended the inning with two outs, allowing Clayton Sparks to clear the bases with a three-run double.

HSU snuck in one in the eighth but SU didn't allow any more to arrive at the 9-3 final. Marcom earned the win, allowing two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out two in five innings.

Southwestern posted 11 hits on the evening and was led by Wehman going 2-2 with one run scored, two RBIs and three walks. Sparkes also recorded two hits in the game and drove home a team high three runs.

Southwestern improved to 18-18 on the year while Hardin Simmons falls to 10-21 overall. The Pirates close the regular season on the road with a three-game series against Schreiner University beginning on Friday at 2 p.m.
