Pirates use extra innings to eek out win over Concordia

Southwestern split day two of a three game series with Concordia, falling 11-6 in game two before winning game three 7-5 on Saturday.

In game one Concordia used a steady flow of runs to defeat the Pirates, scoring in every inning they came to the plate. Southwestern matched the Tornados in hits with nine a piece, but Southwestern committed four errors to fall 11-6.

Austin Smith garnered the loss on the mound, allowing three runs, one earned, on one hit with three walks in 1.2 innings. At the plate, Will Cates and Robert Wehman both posted 2-4 games with one RBI.

The Pirates jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, scoring one run in the first and second inning. Concordia fought back and took the lead 5-2 after a one run third and four run fourth. It took two innings, but Southwestern evened the count with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. With a 5-5 tie, neither team was able to break the stalemate through regulation, forcing extra innings.

It wasn't until the 12th inning that Southwestern took control. Ben Little singled through the left side to drive home Will Cates who posted a one-out triple. Chase Allen singled one batter later to bring home Little and put SU on top 7-5.

Southwestern needed just four batters to close out the win in the bottom half of the inning.

Noah Clark earned the win with no runs or hits while walking one and striking out one. Cates had a huge outing, going 3-6 with one RBI and two runs scored. Ethan Hallmark also went 3-6 from the plate with one RBI and one run scored.

Now 2-2 on the year, Southwestern heads to Millington, TN for three neutral site contests. They first face Fontbonne on Friday at 3 p.m.
