SHREVEPORT, La. – An RBI single in the 13th inning handed the Southwestern University baseball team a 5-4 loss to Centenary Friday night in the opening game of a SCAC series at Shehee Stadium.

The Pirates fell to 4-19 overall and 1-6 in SCAC as the Gents handed Southwestern its eighth one-run loss of the season. Centenary stayed perfect in league play with a 4-0 record while also improving to 11-11 on the year.

Southwestern tied the game in the top of the fourth inning when Colten Shea singled through the right side to score Chase Allen. Allen finished 3-for-4 as one of two Pirates with three base hits in the loss – Will Cates was also 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored.

The Pirate bullpen held steady as Joseph Koch and Nino Tutino combined for five innings of scoreless baseball. The duo allowed four hits and walked one apiece as starter Jason Stading earned a no-decision in a rough start. Stading pitched 2.2 innings with four runs allowed although just one was earned and struck out three.

In extra innings the Pirates left just one base runner with another runner being erased on a pick-off attempt from a Gents pitcher.

Shea and Charlie St. Clair also finished with multiple base hits, as St. Clair extended his hitting streak to five. Shea added the game tying RBI as St. Clair went 2-for 6 with a run scored.

Carl Mueller was tagged with a tough loss in relief going 4.2 innings and allowing the game winning although it was unearned. Mueller struck out two while walking one and scattering four hits in the loss.

Taylor Henry picked up the win for Centenary pitching three innings of scoreless baseball and moved to 3-2 on the year.

The Pirates and the Gents return to the diamond Saturday in a double-header with the first pitch slated for 1 p.m. Southwestern is still looking for its first series win while the Gents are looking to stay perfect in SCAC play.
