Pirates drop heartbreaker in ninth

AUSTIN – The Southwestern University baseball dropped a heartbreaker Sunday afternoon as Concordia scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth for a 6-5 win and the series sweep.

The Pirates fell to 0-4 on the year as the Tornados improved to 3-0 and might be one of the top NCAA Division III teams in the region.

Southwestern jumped out to an early lead as the offense out hit Concordia 11-6. On the mound Joseph Koch gave the Pirates an outstanding effort allowing only one hit through five innings of scoreless work.

Charlie St. Clair and Jake Pawelek started off the second inning with back-to-back singles. After St. Clair stole third, the sophomore gave the Pirates the early lead when Ben Little grounded into a double play.

In the top of the third Clayton Sparks picked up his first hit of the game on a RBI single that scored Colten Shea. Shea had reached on a walk as Sparks finished 2-for-4 on the day.

Again in the fourth inning the Pirates would take a commanding 5-0 lead when Will Cates singled home Drew Fleischman and Ben Little. One batter later, Shea would push Cates across for his only RBI of the day.

Concordia was able to pull together two hits as the Tornados tied the game at 5-5. The Tornados got a solid effort from their bullpen scattering just four hits and one run over the final six innings.

Brent Shaekel scored the winning run on a wild pitch as he singled to lead-off the inning. Shaekel moved to second on a wild pitch and later stole third before scoring the winning run with one out.

Southwestern will look for their first win next weekend when the Pirates open a three game series Friday at LeTourneau. First pitch from Longview, Texas is set for 6 p.m.
