Centenary Tops Baseball in Slugfest

Centenary Tops Baseball in Slugfest

The two teams combined for 28 runs on 23 hits, but Centenary came out on top and defeated Southwestern 19-9.

The Gents jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before the Pirates responded in the third inning.  Charlie Garrett singled and later scored on a Jeff Glasgow double powered out to left field.  Then Southwestern loaded the bases after Jay Sterling and Cruz Luna were each hit with pitches.  The 'Bucs narrowed the gap as Glasgow crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

However, Centenary started to break away in the 4th and 6th innings, scoring three runs in each frame to make it 9-2.

Southwestern made it interesting in the bottom of the 6th inning. The Pirates drew 4 walks in the inning which led to a Tyler Herriage run. Then Glasgow reached on an error by the left fielder and Garrett and Colton Shea both scored on the play. Jay Sterling followed with a RBI double and brought home Zachary Lynch to cut it to 9-6.

The Gents scored 8 runs on 4 hits in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to 17-9.  The Pirates rallied again in the bottom half scoring a pair of runs on some Centenary miscues.  Glasgow earned his third RBI of the day on a single to left field that scored Garrett.

The visitors scored two more runs in the eighth inning to seal the 19-9 game in their favor.  Jeff Glasgow led the Pirates by going 3-5 with a double, a run scored, and three runs batted in.

The Pirates move to 1-9 on the season and the Gents go to 5-2.  Southwestern returns to action at home this Tuesday, when they play Hardin-Simmons at 6:00 PM.
