Bucs Come Up Short Against Bulldogs

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern Pirates rallied throughout the night but came up short and lost to the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs 7-4.

Tony Gennusa got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard first.  He singled, stole second base, and scored on a Ryan Hill ground out to give them the 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning.

The Pirates tied it up at 1-1 when Zachary Lynch scored on a RBI double down the right field line by Jeff Glasgow in the bottom of the 1st.

In the top of the 3rd inning, Christian DeBlanc and Gennusa both scored on a Klaus Bohrmann single to right field to put the Bulldogs up 3-1. The Pirates retaliated in the bottom half to close the gap to 3-2 after Jay Sterling tripled and later scored.

Texas Lutheran added one run in the 5th, two in the 6th and one in the 7th to build up a 7-2 lead.

The Pirates fought back in the bottom of the 7th inning.  Jay Sterling started the rally with a double to left field. He advanced to third on a single through the left side by Will Burks.  Sterling later scored on a wild pitch. Zachary Lynch reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second base as Burks got caught in a rundown.  Lynch took third and later scored on wild pitches to cut the lead to 7-4.

The Pirates rallies in the last two innings were both halted by double plays to seal the victory for Texas Lutheran.

Jay Sterling led Southwestern by going 3 for 5 on the night, was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle, and scored twice.  Zachary Lynch drew four walks and also scored twice for the Bucs.  Jason Yarnell earned the win for the Bulldogs with Blake Balazs getting the save.

The Pirates fall to 1-6 on the season, while the Bulldogs stay undefeated and go to 6-0.

The Pirates will be at home again on Saturday, February 16th, for a doubleheader against Centenary at 1:00PM.
