Pirates' Errors Leads to a LeTourneau Blowout Win

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern struggled to find themselves as they lost 17-1 to LeTourneau on Friday evening. 

The Yellowjackets jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning, after the Pirates committed 2 crucial errors. It all started when Garrett Methvin hit a single, then advanced to second on the throw. Rhett Bohannon then advanced to third and scored on an error by the left fielder. Dustin Varna also scored. Chris Betram then doubled to left field, allowing Dillon Yates and Garrett Methvin to score as well. Later in that inning, an error by the pitcher allowed Ryan and Chris Bertram to score. In all that top 1st inning, the Pirates allowed 6 runs, 4 hits, and 4 RBIs.

Later in the top of the 5th inning, Bohannon singled, and advanced to second on an error by the centerfielder. As a result, Caleb Pritchett and Ryan Bertram scored. Bryce Griffin then doubled to centerfield, which had Bohannon and Varna scoring, pushing the lead to 13-0. 

In the top 6th inning, Dillon Yates hit a homerun for his team, putting more misery on the Pirates. The Yellowjackets had a commanding 16-0 lead after the top 6th inning, in which they had 3 hits, 3 runs, and 2 RBIs.

The Pirates struggled all evening long. Their only run came in the bottom 6th inning, when Colton Shea scored after Zachary Lynch singled. In all, they had a total of 8 errors and had only 1 run on 6 hits. They allowed 18 hits and 17 runs for the Yellowjackets.

Cody Whitley was the winning pitcher and Kendall Henkes garnered the loss. This was LeTourneau's first game of the season, in which they begin with a convincing win, putting them at 1-0. The Pirates dropped to 1-3 on the season. Southwestern will have two chances tomorrow to rebound from the loss, when they play a doubleheader at home against LeTourneau at 1:00PM.
