Former SU student-athletes impart wisdom to Class of 2015

Transforming Lives. Two words that ring throughout Southwestern’s campus and were echoed Saturday in the speeches of two former Southwestern student-athletes at the 2015 Commencement Convocation where over 60 student-athletes received their degrees.

Larry Haynes ’72 played baseball for the Pirates from 1969-1972 and gave the Commencement Address entitled “Gifts” to the Class of 2015.

Haynes recounted the many gifts bestowed to him during his time at Southwestern, not just in the classroom but the invaluable time spent with wise people outside of the classroom. He spoke of constantly competing with the very brilliant students which forced him to “expand my vision about my capabilities”.

“Life-long learning is irrefutably critical to your future success,” continued Haynes. “Why? Success is a process that never ends- how you define success changes and evolves through different stages of your lives.”

Part of Haynes life-long learning comes from his continued curiosity. “If you want a great life, ask great questions,” directed Haynes. “Through curiosity, I’ve gained new perspectives, unparalleled learning and growth, and a chance for interesting conversation and reflection at every interaction. Seek insight from people in all walks of life, in every profession- ask with humility and they’ll often share with you powerful insights from their experiences that’ll help to advance your thinking.”

Daryl Allen ’93 is the President of the Alumni Association as a former Southwestern basketball player and officially welcomed the class of 2015 to the Association of Southwestern University Alumni through a speech entitled “All That You Shall Receive”.
