Women's Cross Country Finish Saints Invitational

Women's Cross Country Finish Saints Invitational
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Southwestern women's cross country competed in their first 6k race in the 2019 Saints Invitational, hosted at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio.

Coach Steven Carry talked about both freshman runners who competed in the race.

"This was the first time Pertuit and Lauren have run the 6K distance, so coming in we weren't sure how they would respond to the extra distance. I thought both ladies really stayed patient though and had a good first experience."

Emma Pertuit placed 31st out of 84 runners with a time of 26:08 and averaging a pace of 7:00 minutes a mile, and  Lauren Calzado finished with a time of 28:59 and a pace of  7:46 a mile.

"Pertuit has had some good workouts lately, and it showed this morning. She met her goal for the day and gave us a great point of reference for training moving forward. Lauren has been cross-training a lot lately due to some nagging aches and pains, so today was just about getting in a good, hard effort," Cary said. "I thought she did well considering she's spent more time on the bike lately than running."

Looking forward to the next race which will take place in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Carry wants to take today's race results into the next meet.

"I'm really happy with how the ladies did today. We're getting better every week and the results this morning emphasize that. We want to continue this trend in 2 weeks when we compete at Chile Pepper."

The Pirates will compete in the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 8 a.m.
