Duarte claims second straight title for Southwestern

SEGUIN, Texas - Lilly Duarte continues to keep pace with the late summer temperatures on the cross country course. The senior's early season hot streak continued Saturday as Duarte won the Texas Lutheran Invitational and paced Southwestern University to a third place team finish.

Duarte claimed her best time at Southwestern in the 5k as she covered the course in 19:25.87 winning the non-Division I race. Her time was also the fifth best overall behind four Division I runners from UTSA and Incarnate Word.

Emily Ammon and Kara Koinis just missed a second straight top 10 finish for a second week in a row. Ammon checked in at 12th with a time of 22:04.21 while Koinis finished 13th with a time of 22:14.96.

Host, Texas Lutheran won the team title for non-Division I schools, while UTSA earned the overall title.

The Pirates take a week off before returning to action Sept. 20 at the Ricardo Romo Classic in San Antonio and hosted by UTSA.
