GEORGETOWN – Led by senior Lilly Duarte the Southwestern University women's cross country team raced to an exceptional start Friday night at San Gabriel Park hosting the Southwestern Dual Opener.

Racing in their first action of the season, the Pirates got an exceptional effort from Duarte, Kara Koinis and Emily Ammon as the trio finished first, fourth and fifth respectively. The dual meet with Concordia saw the Pirates best their cross-town rivals in the team standings.

Duarte's first place finish saw the senior cover the 4000-meter course with a time of 15:33.14 dominating the field. Concordia posted a second and third finish as Koinis finished fourth with a time of 17:04.00.  

Ammon rounded out the Pirate trio in the top five as she posted a time of 17:55.83. Sarah Puffer, Brandi Martin and Zainab Oketokoun also earned a top 10 finish for the Pirates.

Southwestern returns to action next Saturday at the Texas Lutheran Invitational in Seguin, Texas.
