Southwestern Volleyball Defeated by Aurora

RICHARDSON, Texas — The Southwestern University Pirates volleyball team lost to the Aurora Spartans in four sets, featuring a back-and-forth final set that featured seven ties and two lead changes, dropping the set 27-25. 

Southwestern opened the match with a decisive 25-18 victory in the first set, hitting a match-high .282, but lost 25-14 and 25-21 in the next two sets. Seven attack errors doomed the Pirates in the final set, dropping the team to 4-3 on the season. 

  • Southwestern had no answer for Aurora's Sydnei Avery, who posted a match-high 22 kills on a .267 hitting percentage with two block assists. Teammate Imani Freeman also finished in double figures with 16 kills.

  • Ellen McGown and Riley Brantley each finished with 13 kills. McGown hit .256 for the match, adding nine digs.

  • Katelyn Whitehead directed the offense with 43 assists on 130 touches with three errors. Ali Grona had a match-high 24 digs.

The Pirates close their participation in the UT-Dallas Invitational with a match against UT-Dallas. Southwestern will return home next weekend for a match against Concordia Texas on Saturday, Sep. 14 at 2:00 p.m.
