Duck and Dooley Lead The Pirate Offense To Win Over Saints

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Trailing from behind, the Pirates battled Our Lady of the Lake in a 3-2 win with Senior Jamison Duck and Freshman Alyssa Dooley to carry the Pirates to victory.

Duck, who hit a career-high of 26 kills, played as a huge leader in point and keeping the Pirates in the game. Not only a leading offensive threat, Duck also played a steady role defensively by adding 11 digs to help set up the Pirate offense. Dooley, a freshman from Magnolia, Texas, has grown in confidence and played each game in the 2018 season. Also breaking a career high of 22 kills, Dooley did not only show skill in the placement of her attacks but also provided the winning kill in the final set to give the Pirates the win 15-13 over the Saints. On the defensive end the backbone, Brandi Campos, gave the team 24 digs to help set the offense. Coach Don Flora adds, "Again, Brandi was so solid as the defensive anchor for this team.  And having five people with double-digit digs was impressive tonight."

Other standout players included Makenzie Mendez who helped by adding 64 assists in setting up the Pirate offense as well adding 12 digs. Lauren Crabtree also helped the Pirates with nine kills and 13 digs.

Coming from behind, thePirates were able to win the first set against the Saints, however, the next two set the Saints would take, putting the Pirates in a position to continue or end in the fourth set. The Pirates did not give into the pressure and fought back to bring the game to a fifth set. In the final set, Campos helped keep a steady serve for the Pirates to help gain a lead. However, the Saints came back to 11-11. In the next few plays, Dooley was able to give the Pirates two kills that helped them take the game and add another win to the Pirate season.

Flora says that tonight's match was one where the girls needed to dig deep and stick together as a team. "We were able to withstand some real high-quality middle attacking from OLLU. They did a wonderful job transition attacking with their middle hitters."

Flora ends with, "It was nice to see some resolve and focus on playing clean volleyball in crunch time during that fifth set."

Up next, the Pirates take a break to get ready for their match against UT-Tyler. The game will take place in Georgetown on Tuesday, Oct. 2nd at 7:00 p.m.
