Pirates Comeback Battle in Five Set Win Over CTX

AUSTIN, Texas – Pirates make comeback in a close 15-12 win in a five-setter against the Concordia Tornadoes.

Junior Landri Brown recorded a season-high of 13 kills and Senior Jamison Duck and Freshman Ashley Whitlock totaled nine kills for the Pirates.

In the first set, the Pirates had the advantage by taking the lead early on with strong serves from Duck. This momentum helped them to continue their lead and win 25-22. However, in the next two sets, Southwestern would find themselves trailing behind Concordia 14-25 and the 20-25. The Pirates would start strong but allowed the Tornados to catch up and take the lead to win the sets.

In the fourth set, the Pirates changed the tide and came out dominating the Tornados while keeping a two to three point lead, ending the set 25-16. Going into the fifth set, both the teams stayed neck to neck until Tornados Marjani Myles made two pivotal kills that pulled Concordia ahead 10-7. However, the Pirates resilience did not stop there and they fought back to gain the lead 11- 10 with Brown's 12th kill of the night. Reaching game point, it was Brown's final kill, assisted by Makenzie Mendez, which sealed the final winning score 15-12.

Coach Don Flora sums up his thoughts about his players by saying "Makenzie Mendez grows and thinks her way through a match like tonight that was very impressive. And Brandi Campos defensively made some big-time plays for us when we needed them the most. Also seeing Landri Brown contribute offensively for the duration of a match is a big sign of development."

Flora also mentions that the game was a battle between two very different teams. "This is an opportunity for our team to grow and develop their volleyball IQ," says Flora.

With an exciting and hard-fought win for the Pirates, they now get ready for home games this weekend in the SCAC Divisional Crossover. Teams such as Johnson & Wales, Centenary, Dallas and Colorado College will travel to Georgetown to compete in Pirate waters. To find game times, please click here.
