Exciting Five-Setter Over TLU In Pair of Southwestern Volleyball Wins

KERRVILLE, Texas - The Southwestern volleyball team took a thrilling five-setter game against TLU with a 15- 6 win to win the second match. The Pirates swept Schreiner 3-0 earlier in the afternoon to open the weekend's games. 

The Pirates are now 3-4 in the season and are 2-0 in SCAC conference play.

Game 1

Southwestern 3, Schreiner 0 Set Scores: 25-15, 25-17, 25-19

What gave the Pirates the upper hand in the match against the Mountaineers was the ability to pull away with a huge lead in the matches. Brandi Campos and Jamison Duck helped pull a huge lead in the first set by serving until 11-1. This seemed to continue for the last two sets with the Mountaineers right behind the Pirates. Duck had a game-high of 11 kills followed by Landri Brown with six kills and Lauren Crabtree with five kills. Duck once again had the high with 15 digs with lobaro Brandi Campos who has 14 digs. Freshman setter Makenzie Mendez also stood out for the Pirates offense by totaling a team high of 34 assists.

Game 2

Southwestern 3, TLU 2 Set Scores: 25-21, 24-26, 25-15, 23-25, 15-6 

In this showdown between Pirates and Bulldogs, both teams battled hard to win the match. In the end, Southwestern was able to pull ahead with a big enough lead making it hard for the Bulldogs to come back into the game. Once again Jamison Duck had a season-high of 20 kills and 21 digs. Also, Freshman Alyssa Dooley had 15 kills for the Pirates and Ashley Whitlock had nine kills. Brandi Campos had a total of 23 digs to help set up Makenzie Mendez who had 54 assists and five kills.

The Pirates seemed to have the ball on their side of the net going into conference play. Don Flora comments about the win over TLU by saying "We give credit to TLU as they played clean and executed well today. This type of match is exactly what SU volleyball needs today."
