Fifth-Ranked Pirates Cruise Past Schreiner in SCAC Action

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The No. 5 ranked Southwestern University volleyball team wasted no time with the Schreiner Mountaineers on Friday afternoon as they earned a quick sweep at the Bell Center on campus of Trinity University.

The win is the 20th for Southwestern on the season, their 18th straight season with 20 wins or more. They were completely dominant in the match, hitting a red hot .312 in the match and holding the Mountaineers to -.062.

The dominance showed in the first set, as Southwestern simply did not let Schreiner do anything in their attack, holding them .-375 hitting, while hitting .474 on their end, for a 25-3 victory.

"Today in set one showed some true focus on some key areas that we have been training and areas that we collectively agreed upon were important to us all," said Head Coach Don Flora. "So, seeing numerous block touches and being clean in our serve receive was of high value to us today."

Schreiner picked themselves up and pushed the Pirates in set two, but it was Southwestern who emerged victorious, 25-22, before closing the match out with another dominant set, winning 25-10 for the clean sweep.

Senior Kate Mitchell led the way with 11 kills on .562 hitting while fellow senior Piper Sisemore had seven kills on an unbelieveable .778 hitting. Junior Megan Grimes had 32 assists while Mitchell and junior Jamison Duck each had three service aces.

Defensively, junior Brandi Campos had 11 digs while Grimes pitched in 10. Sisemore had a pair of solo blocks while Mitchell added one.

The Pirates move to 20-3 on the season and 5-2 in SCAC play. They return to action tomorrow in San Antonio as they open the day with a rematch against No. 3 Trinity at 12:30 PM followed by 3:00 PM matchup against a fiesty Texas Lutheran squad.
