#16 Pirates shine on opening day

TACOMA, Wash. – Opening the season in Washington, 16th-ranked Southwestern wasted no time testing themselves as they faced No. 8 Carthage in the first match and followed with tournament host Puget Sound.

Carthage took the first set but SU bounced back to win the second and third sets to lead 2-1. With a huge run midway through the fourth set Carthage tied the match but the Pirates were just too strong and won the fifth and final set on a Kate Mitchell kill.

The Pirates were sharp early against Puget Sound and, with the exception of narrowly dropping the third set, Southwestern cruised to their second win of the day 3-1.

Head Coach Don Flora on the win over eighth-ranked Carthage...
"It was huge to respond with confidence and some poise after set one versus Carthage, and it was even more important to respond with confidence and energy in the fifth set. Taking the match against an elite national program sets the tone for this era of Pirate volleyball."

Head Coach Don Flora on the win over Puget Sound...
"Making a regional statement in UPS' home gym on a Friday night was huge. We had numerous people make plays that helped secure a valuable west region win."
