Volleyball splits matches in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Pirates defeated Webster 3-2 before falling 3-1 to Washington University on Friday.

Southwestern started strong with a 25-19 set one win, posting a .262 attack percentage and holding Webster to .143.

Set two Webster led as the Pirates' offense struggled at just .030. The Pirates returned to form in the third and fifth sets, easily winning those 25-15 and 15-5 to secure the win.

Southwestern hit .151 as a team and was led by Haley Moffett who posted 14 kills and a .333 attack percentage. Kate Mitchell added in 10 kills while Kaitlyn Foster had 26 digs to lead SU. Sydney Rochelle and Nikki Welch split setting duties and had 21 and 19 assists, respectively.

The Pirates were strong at the start of the match against Washington, winning the first set 25-19, but were ultimately unable to keep the offense alive as they dropped the final three sets 25-16, 25-19 and 25-20.

SU hit just .043 for the match and was led by Olivia Drummond and Abbie Robb while Chandler Lentz posted a team high 26 digs.

Now 3-3 on the year, Southwestern faces Wittenberg and Wheaton on Saturday to close out the ASICS Invite.
