Playoffs come early in Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The post season may still be a week away, but the Southwestern Pirates got a taste of it this weekend as they closed out the SCAC/ASC Crossover.

Southwestern opened against Concordia University who came in wanting to prove something.

Set one set the stage for the match as the lead seesawed back and forth before Southwestern took control midway through the frame.

Concordia started the second set strong, quickly building a lead with quick sets to go up by seven 17-10. Southwestern began to battle back and pulled within one, 18-17, before the Tornados closed out the set 25-21.

The Pirates regrouped and came out on a mission in the third set, jumping out to a 7-1 lead. A Tornado timeout could not stop the run as SU pulled ahead even further, 11-1, prompting another CTX timeout to stop the rally. But, Southwestern could not be tamed as they cruised to a 25-12 set three win.

Just as in the second set, the Pirates got out to a slow start and allowed the Tornados the opportunity to build and early lead that would be hard for SU to overcome. Southwestern continued to press and made a late run to pull within four, 18-14. That is as close SU would pull, however, as Concordia closed out the set 25-18 to force a fifth and final set.

The final set saw long rallies early capped off by big Pirate swings as SU pulled ahead 8-2 by the halfway mark. With the switching of sides so did the momentum as Concordia stormed to within one 11-10. Southwestern regained control and closed out the win 15-10.

Southwestern closed the crossover against Mary Hardin-Baylor, seeking revenge from a loss earlier in the season. The Pirates trailed most of the first set but pulled ahead when it mattered most, winning 27-25. UMHB seized control and pull out 25-22 wins in set two and three to take a 2-1 lead over SU.

The Pirates had plenty of fight left in them and fought back in the fourth set until Mary Hardin Baylor pulled away at the end to win 25-18 and hand SU the 3-1 loss.

Southwestern was led by Macey Pool's 12 kills while Lorin Froetschel had a big game with 10 kills and a .259 attack percentage. Riley Caskey and Abbie Robb added nine kills each. Defensively, Andie Alford led with 21 digs while Chandler Lentz added 17, Nikki Welch 15 and Pool 14.

The Pirates close out the regular season at 24-10. They enter the SCAC Conference Tournament on Friday as the #3 seed, facing Schreiner at 1:30 pm in San Antonio.
