Pirates go 2-1 in SCAC action over weekend

SEGUIN, Texas - The Pirates took two of three matches this weekend to remain in third place in the SCAC.

The Pirates opened the weekend with a rematch against conference rival Trinity. The match started tight but the Tigers pulled away with a 8-2 run before taking the first set 25-16.

Southwestern opened the second set on a 4-0 run but Trinity quickly responded to tie the contest 4-4. Southwestern maintained a slight lead throughout most of the set, leading as late as 21-19, but were unable to close out the win, falling 25-23.

Trinity continued to sneak out points to stay just ahead of SU and took the third and final set, 25-21.

Day two Southwestern opened strong, hitting .362 in the opening set against Texas Lutheran and cruised to a 25-10 set one win.

The Pirates' attack stalled a bit in the second set, but a tough defensive presence allowed SU the capture the win 25-22. TLU snuck out the third set 25-17 after posting just three hitting errors in the set, but SU rallied to easily win the fourth 25-13 with a .464 attack percentage.

With plenty of momentum on their side, Southwestern opened with a huge set one win 25-7 over Schreiner. The Mountaineers pushed back but Southwestern held strong to win 25-17, 25-15 to close out the weekend on a high note.

Macey Pool led the attack for the Pirates over the weekend, posting 38 kills and a .223 attack percentage. Kaitlyn Foster added in 32 kills while Lorin Froetschel and Abbie Robb posted 19 each.

Nikki Welch had 93 assists as she took on the bulk of the setting for the Pirates. Chandler Lentz led in aces with six and was second in digs with 60. Foster led in the category with 61.

Southwestern improves to 15-8 overall and 7-3 in the SCAC after the weekend. They return to action on Friday, October 18th as they head to San Antonio to face Webster, Springfield, Eastern and Redlands.
