#7 Pirates Open SCAC West Divisional #2 with Win

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern needed four sets to win a hard fought match against Austin College to open the SCAC West Divisional #2 on Friday evening. SU won 3-1 (26-24, 23-25, 25-22, 25-21) to remain perfect in SCAC conference action.

Southwestern gutted out the set one win, 26-24, to open the divisional with the tone they were looking for, but Austin College came back strong to squeak out the set two win, 23-25.

The third set was much of the same with the two teams battling to the very end. The Pirates came out with the emotional win, 25-22, and rode the momentum into the fourth set.

Jill Wigington's kill down the line followed by Christina Nicholls' (pictured) clever tip kill gave SU a two point lead, 9-7 in game four. Southwestern continued to press and pulled ahead by six, 19-13, late in the match forcing Austin College into a timeout to attempt to break their momentum.

Rachel Thibodeau's kill down the line dashed those hopes but the 'Roos continued to fight and pulled within three, 22-19. SU persevered, however, to win the fourth set 25-21 and the match 3-1.

Southwestern continues the divisional on Saturday, facing the University of Dallas at 1:00pm who fell to Trinity 3-1 on Friday evening. Trinity and SU face off in the final game on Saturday night at 6pm.
