Volleyball Splits Final Day of Action

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Pirates closed out the Trinity National Invitational on Saturday afternoon with a 1-1 split of matches. Southwestern defeated Texas Lutheran 3-1 before falling to once-ranked Occidental 3-1 to move to 9-2 on the year.

The offensive attack of Southwestern was back to their old form after tough games on Friday evening and posted a .326 team hitting percentage against TLU. The Bulldogs put up a fight early in the contest, challenging SU for the win in game one and taking game two from SU. The Pirates sprung to life and dashed Texas Lutheran's hopes of an upset by dominating sets three and four to win, 25-21, 20-25, 25-12, 25-15.

Lindsay Thompson led the attack with 12 kills and an impressive .450 hitting percentage with just three errors in 20 attempts. Sarai Tenerelli posted 15 digs while Rachel Thibodeau, Allison Stubbs and Chandler Lentz were also big factors on the defensive side with 11, 10 and 10 digs respectively.

The last game of the day pitted Southwestern against Occidential College who is fighting to get back in the AVCA Top 25. The Pirates had a rough start with a .108 team hitting percentage and dropping the first set 18-25. SU went on attack in the second set with a .400 hitting percentage and won 25-16, but Occidental turned up the defense to take sets three and four, 25-17, 25-19.

Thibodeau and Jill Wigington (pictured) posted a team high 11 kills in the match and Thompson had 6 blocking assists in the game, tying her own record, while Christina Nicholls recorded 43 assists.

The Pirates open SCAC conference action on Friday afternoon at the SCAC West Divisional #1 in Sherman, TX. They face divisonal host Austin College on Friday night and take on new SCAC opponent the University of Dallas and SCAC rival Trinity on Saturday.
