PIRATES SOLID DEFENSE PUSHES THEM PAST BULLDOGS

The Southwestern volleyball team traveled to Seguin, Texas to continue their season as they tackled the Bulldogs of Texas Lutheran University in straight sets. The Pirates continued to improve their record in this out of conference match-up with 25-19, 25-18, and 25-23 wins.

The Bulldogs took an early 13-10 lead in set one to start the match. A run of solid serves by freshman Allison Stubbs and tough defense by the Pirates put them back on top 18-13. The Bulldogs rallied back to come  within one, 18-19 before the Pirates ran away with the win, 25-19.

In set two, the Pirates found themselves behind the Bulldogs 4-0 before they scored their first point. From there, both teams traded points back and forth until a dominating block from juniors Lindsay Thompson and Jill Wigington gave the Pirates the momentum to finish out the set, 25-18.

Although set three was the closest of the night, 25-23, the Pirates never lost the lead. Kills from Thompson, who lead the team with 10 for the match, and sophomore Rachel Thibodeau,second with 8, helped the Pirates edge past the Bulldogs for the win. Also contributing to the win were junior Christina Nicholls, with a team high 28 assists for the match, and sophomore Annie Hutson who recorded 16 digs.

The Pirates have an off weekend until they travel to Jackson, Mississippi October 9th and 10th to continue conference play. They open the weekend against Millsaps on October 9th at 2:00 PM.
