#16 PIRATES SWEEP OPENING DAY ACTION AT HOME AGAINST ASC OPPONENTS

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern volleyball opened up their 2010 campaign on Wednesday night by playing host to American Southwest Conference opponents Mary Hardin Baylor and Schreiner. The Pirates did not lose a game as they won 3-0, 3-0 in the two matches.

The first match of the night pitted a Crusader team that struggled in the 2009 season, winning just 8 games, against the seasoned Pirate squad. UMHB started out strong and gave the Pirates a run for their money in the opening set as Southwestern narrowly won game one 25-23.

After getting one win under their belts Southwestern jumped into action and quickly went up 10-1. UMHB put together a run of their own and cut the lead to two, 15-13. After two more points by the Cru Southwestern took over and cruised to the game two win, 25-15.

The Pirates continued their strong early start by jumping out to a 10-2 lead to open the third. Driving outside attacks kept the pace and enabled SU to mount a lead. The domination continued as the Pirates closed out the game 25-12 and match 3-0.

In match two against Schreiner, Southwestern once again started out shaky with mental errors allowing the Mountaineers to lead 5-0 early. After Head Coach Hannah Long's timeout rallied the troops the Pirates got back in the swing of things, quickly evening the score 5-5.

The teams traded points midway through the game with Southwestern taking a small 15-11 advantage. The Pirates were able to retain the lead the rest of the way, winning the first set 25-15.

Southwestern took control early in game two, playing sound ball and forcing the Mountaineers into errors and led 15-8. Senior Lauren Brown's monstrous kill gave Southwestern a commanding lead that was never in jeopardy as they cruised to the game two victory, 25-14.

In what ended up being the final game of the night the Pirates once again took command early and never looked back, easily closing out the game in similar fashion, 25-15.

The wins start the Pirates off at 2-0 on the year. They head to Maryville, TN to face some of the top teams in the nation over the weekend beginning on Friday against 2008 National Champion Emory at 3:30pm.
