SHERMAN, Texas – Southwestern’s volleyball team
pushed their winning streak to 24 over the weekend with three wins
at the Austin College Tournament held in Sherman, Texas. The
Pirates won in straight sets over ASC Conference opponents McMurry,
Concordia and Hardin-Simmons.
Friday started with the Pirates facing off with McMurry University
and Southwestern jumped out early and took the match in three
games, 25-13, 25-18, 25-16. Senior Audra Gentry led with 11 kills
while first-year Rachel Thibodeau recorded nine with a .389 hitting
percentage. Senior Sam Lingamfelter recorded 14 digs in the win and
sophomore Christina Nicholls had 33 assists.
Southwestern closed out day one with a 3-0 victory over Concordia
(TX), winning 25-17, 25-22, 25-10. The Pirates struggled early
hitting just 16% for the first two games, but revved it up in the
final game with a .371 hitting percentage. Gentry led once again
with 11 kills while sophomore Lindsay Thompson was close behind
with 10 and boasted a .421 hitting percentage. Lingamfelter dugs 23
balls while Nicholls and senior Ali Zein-Eldin also had double
digit digs with 10 and 11, respectively.
The Pirates returned to their stellar early play in Sunday’s
match, starting off with a .382 hitting percentage and took game
one 25-14. SU made things a little more interesting in the final
two games, but found a way to win them 25-22 and 25-21 to take the
match 3-0. Gentry had 13 kills and Thompson recorded 10.
Lingamfelter had 23 digs while senior Reese Cisneros was close
behind with 16.
Southwestern returns home for their final competition before the
SCAC Tournament. The Pirates will host Concordia (WI), St. Thomas
(Houston), Loyola University-LA and Texas Lutheran at their annual
Halloween Tournament on October 30-31.
