Belton, TX – Put another notch on the wall for the
Southwestern University volleyball team as they improve to 15-3 on
the year with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-15, 25-18) win over the University of
Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday night. The win marks the 13th win in
a row for the #14 nationally-ranked Pirates.
Southwestern got ahead early in game one and showed their dominance
over the Crusaders by cruising to a 25-9 set win. In game two the
Cru would put up a fight and actually take an 11-8 lead at one
point, but SU won 17 of the final 21 points to take the win 25-15.
Set three saw the Pirates locked up with UMHB at 12 before another
surge put the set and match away for Southwestern, 25-18.
Senior Audra Gentry led the way for the Pirates with 11 kills.
Sophomore Lindsay Thompson had a strong attacking night as well,
putting away eight balls on 16 total attempts with no errors for a
.500 hitting percentage. As a team, the Pirates had a .333 hitting
percentage including a .562 percentage in the first set.
Defensively the Pirates were all over the court with 10 players
recording digs, including 12 from senior Sam Lingamfelter, 11 from
Gentry and 10 by senior Reese Cisneros. Lingamfelter also had three
services aces and senior Ali Zein-Eldin was close behind with two.
Sophomore Christina Nicholls led in assists with 35.
Christina Miller led the Cru with 11 kills and Kaydie Cochran added
six more. Erin Maenius had a team-high 21 digs and Alexis Tharp
paced UMHB with 16 assists.
Southwestern will return to conference action and look to extend
their win streak at the second SCAC West/Central Cross held in
Conway, Ark. Their first match will be against Birmingham-Southern
on Saturday, October 10th at 12:00 pm.
