SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Southwestern University track and field saw their share of personal bests fall on Friday and Saturday as they competed the Trinity Tiger Invitational.
"Overall I think we had some really great performances," said Head Coach Andrew Diehl. "The team came out and put our best foot forwad in front of some great competition."
The Pirates were excellent in throws on the afternoon as sophomore Hannah Bruce threw a 42.02m in the hammer, setting a school record and finishing third among D3 student-athletes. Bruce's discus record would be broken by freshman Julia Glandt as she threw a 36.24m in the event.
Freshman Erin Toro broke her own school record in the shot put, placing eighth with a throw of 11.35m.
Freshman Sofia Garcia placed seventh in the 5000m with a time of 20:27.31 while junior Trinh Ha was eighth with a time of 20:28.87. Sophomore Mallory Harkins was seventh in the 400m with a time of 1:04.45.
"While not every event was perfect, our staff is extremely pleased with how the team competed," said Diehl. "We're on the right track for some great performances in the coming weeks."
On the men's side, junior John Hattan had a huge run in the 5000m, placing fifth with a time of 16:11.29 while freshman Brian McCutcheon led the team in the 100m with a solid time of 11.49.
In field events, freshman Devin Rosas was eighth in the long jump at 6.57m while junior Sam Grubbs earned a ninth place finish in the hammer throw at 40.00m.
The Pirates are back in action on Saturday as they head to San Angelo to compete at Angelo State.
