Pirates have impressive first day at Track & Field Championships

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Southwestern had three event champions and a host of top 10 finishes in day one of the SCAC Track & Field Championships. 

Day one was largely comprised of field events and is also the area the Pirates excell at the most as was evidenced by their performance on Friday. 

Will Devine opened the day with an SU record-setting performance in the shot put. His throw of 12.20 meters gave him the event championship in addition to the SU record. Joseph Quintero snagged third with a throw of 11.36 meters. Rance Thorne and Nathan Balke posted sixth and seventh place finishes with distances of 9.47 meters and 9.26 meters, respectively. 

Quintero won the hammer throw with a throw of 34.77 meters after finishing in fifth in the preliminaries. Thorne took second, throwing 32.32 meters while Balke finished fourth (29.49 meters) and Devine fifth (28.45 meters).

Cody Taylor also brought home a championship with his win in the pole vault with a jump of 4.35 meters. 

Alec Bergerson snagged silver in the triple jump at 12.17 meters, just .05 meters off the event champion. 

On the women's side, Maya Adighibe posted the highest finish for Southwestern with a third place finish in the hammer throw recording a distance of 32.13 meters. Molly Campbell placed sixth at 27.43 meters and Kimi Prevost eighth at 22.62 meters. 

Adighibe also posted the highest finish in the shot put with a throw of 9.56 meters. Prevost took seventh at 9.20 meters and Ellie Enis eighth at 8.87 meters. 

A handful of preliminaries were run on day one with Lando Duarte and Emily Ammon both winning their respective event prelims. Ammon won the 400 hurdles by over a second while Duarte won the 400 meter dash. 

In one of the few track event finals of the day, Joe Sponsel came in fourth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:28.20. 

At the conclusion of day one, the Southwestern men sat in second place with 63 points and trailing first place Trinity by 14 points while the women were tied for third with eight points. 

The Championship will wrap up on Saturday.
