Quintero snags share of SCAC Athlete of the Meet

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – In back-to-back seasons the Southwestern men's track and field team has captured at least a share of the Athlete of the Meet honors at the SCAC Championships and this season Joseph Quintero earned the honor with a sensational meet.

Quintero scored 28 points for Southwestern, tying the effort of Stephen Mason from Trinity who shared the Athlete of the Meet award with Quintero. Quintero was first in the hammer, third in the shot put, third in discus and third in the javelin.

The men's big day continued on day two, led by Daniel Poole and Lando Duarte who snagged event championships. Duarte blazed through the 400 hurdles to win the event in 57.34, two and a half seconds faster than his nearest competitor. Joe Sponsel and Philip Davis took home third and fourth in the event with time of 1:03.83 and 103.85 respectively.

Poole headed up a one, two, three finish in the javelin for the Pirates with a winning throw of 49.42 meters. Rance Thorne took second at 46.47 meters and Quintero third at 38.12 meters. Thorne was also second in the discus with a throw of 33.91 meters.

Sponsel was also third in the 110 hurdles with a time of 19.93 while Duarte headed up a stacked 400 meter dash group that brought home third, fifth, sixth and seventh. Duarte took third in 50.21, Alec Bergerson fifth at 53.35, Issa El Hage sixth at 53.87 and Kyle Bauernschmitt seventh at 55.89.

Alex Medrano finished fifth in the 1500 with a time of 4:20.89 and Paden Williams ended in sixth in the 800 in 2:01.02.

The men's relay teams also had big days with the 4x100 of Xi Wu, Ryan Huiszoon, Adam Shaikh, and Rance Thorne winning third and the 4x400 of Bergerson, Williams, El Hage and Duarte taking home second.

Lilly Duarte was the highest point getter for Southwestern with 18.5 points to tie for tenth place overall. Duarte won the 1500 in a time of 4:47.83, nearly ten seconds ahead of the next closest finisher, and was just tenths of a second away from winning the 800 as she finished in second with a time of 2:19.91. Trinity's Mariana Sigala won the event in a time of 2:19.53.

Kara Koinis also ran well in the 800, posting a time of 2:23.10 to come in third place.

Emily Ammon brought home a second place finish in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:08.79. Southwestern's relay teams secured a pair of fifth place finishes. The 4x100 of Kimi Prevost, Octivia Marcel, Maya Adighibe and Ammon finished in 54.59 while the 4x400 of Ammon, Kara Koinis, Danielle King and Duarte finished in 4:15.75.

Prevost snagged another fifth place finish in the javelin with a toss of 26.95 meters.

Southwestern's men's team finished in second place overall with 156 points while the women brought home third place with 47 points.
