Duarte highlights Pirates’ competition at Tiger Relays

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – UT Austin wasn't the only location hosting tough competition on the track. Southwestern University took on upper-level competition at the Tiger Relays in San Antonio.

Lilly Duarte continued her strong senior campaign with an impressive second place finish in the 1500. Duarte took hold of the second place spot by turn two and was never challenged as the sprinted to the finish line in a time of 4:56.46. Duarte was also a top 10 finisher in the 800, taking home seventh place with a time of 2:28.76.

Emily Ammon was outstanding in the 400 hurdles, finishing in 1:12.22 for ninth place while Octivia Marcell put up a strong showing in the 100 meter dash, placing 13th with a time of 13.80. The women's relay teams also performed well with a pair of sixth place finishes. The 4x100 of Kimi Prevost, Maya Adighibe, Marcell and Ammon finished in a time of 54.73 while the 4x400 for Ammon, Kara Koinis, Danielle King and Duarte posted a time of 4:24.05.

Prevost also had a busy day in field events and was the highest finisher for the Pirates in a handful of events, placing 13th in the javelin, 14th in the discus, and 12th in the shot put.

Paden Williams was the highest finisher for SU on the track, tying for ninth place in a time of 2:00.89 with an impressive run the 800. Alec Bergerson started strong for the Pirates on the men's side, finishing in 20th in the 200 and 17th in the 400, posting times of 23.85 and 53.21.

Alex Medrano came in 18th in the 1500 with a time of 4:30.71. Joe Sponsel and Philip Davis each had top 10 finishes in the 400 hurdles, both competing for the first time in the event. Sponsel posted a time of 1:08.74 and Davis 1:10.42, mirroring their finishes in the 3000 meter steeplechase in times of 10:49.83 and 11:04.98.

Southwestern also had a handful of top 10 finishes in field events with Daniel Poole leading the way in the javelin with a throw of 44.75m for sixth place. Joseph Quintero wasn't far behind to snag eighth place with a throw of 38.61m. Quintero also finished in ninth in 30.72m. Bergerson finished tenth in the long jump with a jump of 5.63m and Davis rounded out his successful day with a tenth place finish in the triple jump at 10.51m.

The Pirates have a much deserved long break until their next meet, competing in the UIW Invitational in San Antonio on April 11th
