Track & field opens season with record setting performance

GEORGETOWN, Texas – In his first meet as a Pirate, first-year Will Devine set an SU record in the shot put, breaking the previous record by nearly 1 meter, at the Tarleton Relays to open the season.

Devine's toss of 12.13 meters landed him in 10th place and headed up a strong field day for the Pirates. Cody Taylor finished in fourth place in the pole vault with a jump of 4.29 meters, 0.3 meters behind event winner Garrett Morris of Angelo State. Daniel Poole also finished in the top 10 with a 43.94 meter javelin throw.

On the track, Lando Duarte posted a top 10 finish as the highest Division III finisher in the 400 meters, coming in ninth place in 51.77. Alec Bergerson came in 15th in the event at 53.91 and Issa El Hage 16th with a time of 54.29.

Paden Williams also finished in the top ten in the 800 meters, taking home eighth place with a time of 1:59.26. Joe Sponsel and Philip Davis each finished in the top five, fourth and fifth respectively, in the 3000 meter steeplechase with times of 10:39.40 and 11:02.49.

On the women's side, the 4x100 relay of Kimi Prevost, Maya Adighibe, Octivia Marcel and Noorie Han finished in fourth place with a time of 55.22 and was the highest finisher for the Pirates. In the 100 meter dash, Marcel and Han both finished in the top 20, posting times of 14.05 and 14.53, respectively. Marcel had another top 20 finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 29.50.

Zainab Oketokoun posted two top 20 finishes, 20th in the 400 meter and 18th in the 800 meter and Danielle King did one better in the 800, finishing in 17th place with a time of 2:49.09. Prevost was also SU's highest finisher in the shot put and discus with a tosses of 33' 4" for 18th place in the shot put (a new SU record) and 25.55 meters in the discus for 20th place.

Southwestern next heads to the Cactus Cup on March 22nd in Kingsville, Texas at Texas A&M University Kingsville.
