Mitrofanova Wins SCAC Women's Tennis Player of the Year

Mitrofanova Wins SCAC Women's Tennis Player of the Year

In exclusive voting by the head coaches in the league, Southwestern's Nina Mitrofanova has been selected as the 2022 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Women's Tennis Player of the Year.

Mitrofanova headlines five Southwestern all-conference athletes, including four singles and two doubles selections.

Southwestern's top-line player throughout the fall and spring, Mitrofanova, a junior from Conroe, Texas, finished the regular season as the 12th-ranked player in the West Region with a mark of 10-5 in dual match play. Among her highlights this year, the junior took home the singles championship at The Ojai 120th Annual Tennis Tournament, defeating the 14th-ranked and 21st-ranked players in the region on the way to the individual title. She was also an All-Tournament honoree at the 2022 SCAC Women's Tennis Championship, leading the then-No. 16 Pirates to the championship match before falling to No. 13 Trinity two weekends ago. The program's first-ever two-time All-American, Mitrofanova, finished as the No. 20 ranked singles player in the nation in 2021.

This marks just the second time a Southwestern women's player has received SCAC Player-of-the-Year accolades. Former Pirate and All-American Mary Cardone earned the league's top honor following the 2017 season.

Juniors Emma Kesterson and Taylor Despriet also earned All-SCAC First Team. Kesterson opened the season as the No. 39-ranked singles player in the nation after posting a 4-1 record at the ITA Regional Championships, advancing to the semifinals. She posted a 10-5 record, going 4-2 at No. 2 singles and 6-3 at No. 3.

Despriet went 11-5, including 8-4 at No. 2 singles, earning SCAC Player of the Week in Week 4 after wins over then-ranked No. 4 Kenyon and No. 12 Denison.

Alli Ziehm earned All-SCAC Second Team. In her junior season, Southwestern's team captain went 9-1, going 6-1 at No. 6 singles and 3-0 at No. 5.

Mitrofanova and first-year Lydia Lee earned All-SCAC First Team in doubles, combining for an 11-6 record in doubles, including 10-6 at No. 1 doubles. The duo also represented Southwestern in The Ojai, placing second.

Ziehm and Kesterson earned All-SCAC Second Team honors with an 8-5 record, including 7-4 at No. 2 and 1-1 at No. 1. The duo also earned All-American honors after winning the ITA Fall Regionals doubles championship.

Southwestern went 16-5 this season, finishing second in the SCAC Championship. The women ended the season ranked No. 20 in the latest ITA National Rankings.
