Women's Tennis Defeats UMHB

GEORGETOWN, Texas — The Southwestern women's tennis team shut out the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders, winning 9-0 at home.

Southwestern made a clean sweep of doubles, winning all three matches 8-0 with Esther Bowers and Taylor Despriet providing a new look at the top spot. The duo defeated Katy Beach and Sofia Sanchez. Nina Elez and Mariana Quetzeri bested Victoria Rendon and Alondra Torres Diaz in No. 2 doubles, and Alli Ziehm and Emma Kesterson beat Amanda Almanza and Sydney Andersen 8-0.

"Taylor and Esther looked good for a new team, especially at the top spot," head coach Billy Porter said. "Alli continues to be a spark plug for us and I thought she played very good in both singles and doubles tonight."

Ziehm was one of four Pirates to win their match in 6-0, 6-0 straight sets, besting Sierra Layne in No. 5 doubles. Kesterson beat Rendon in No. 2 singles, Elez defeated Torres Diaz in No. 3 singles, and Quetzeri beat Laurel Turco in No. 6 singles.

Nina Mitrofanova won 6-0, 6-1 over Beach in the top spot, and Despriet defeated Almanza 6-1, 6-0 in No. 4 singles.

"Nina [Mitrofanova] had a good night by focusing on making more balls, which she did successfully for the most part throughout the match," Porter said.

Southwestern improved to 10-4 with the win. The Pirates will travel to face LeTourneau on Saturday, April 10.
