Women's Tennis Shuts Out Austin College

SHERMAN, Texas — Southwestern women's tennis dominated its match against Austin College, shutting the Kangaroos down for a 9-0 victory. 

Nina Mitrofanova and Taylor Despriet put the Pirates on the board first with an 8-3 victory over Gigi Francis and Phoebe Shapart in No. 1 doubles. Emma Kesterson and Nina Elez shutout Megan Morris and Sierra Thomas for an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles, and Allie Ziehm and Marana Quetzeri followed suit with an 8-0 victory over Maya Leisey and Elena Aventa. 

"Emma was back in the lineup today for the first time in a couple of weeks and looked great in doubles," head coach Billy Porter said. 

Elez opened singles competition with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Maya Leisey at No. 3 singles. Mitrofanova took care of business at No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Francis, and Bowers bested Shapart 6-2, 6-1. Despriet, Wahl, and Ziehm each took 6-0, 6-0 victories at the No. 4, 5, and 6 singles spots. 

"Esther competed at an exceptional level and the girls fed off of that energy," Porter said. "Taylor got us two more big points and soared in singles after tricky doubles.'
