Women's Tennis Defeats Concordia Texas to Open Season 3-0

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The No. 22-ranked Southwestern University Pirates women's tennis team remained perfect through the early part of the season, defeating Concordia Texas 9-0 for its third consecutive shutout victory.

In doubles, Ether Bowers and Nina Mitrofanova defeated Isabella Wiik and Cassandra Landeros-Cabrera 8-1 in the No. 1 spot while Mary Cardone and Cecile Wilde swept Claire Austin and Kaitlin Stevens 8-0 in No. 2 doubles. Alli Ziehm and Sara Le closed out doubles with an 8-2 victory.

"We played very aggressive doubles trying some new things to get out of our comfort zone," Head Coach Billy Porter said.

In singles, Cardone defeated Landeros-Cabrera with a pair of 6-1 sets while Mitrofanova bested Wiik 6-1, 6-0. Mariana Quetzeri swept Austin in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) and Taylor Despriet defeated Natalia Goodman 6-1, 6-0.

Meeshti Shethia won a hard-fought second set 6-3 after defeating Sweitzer 6-0 in the first, winning in the No. 5 spot. Chandler Vrba clinched the match with a straight set victory over Kaitlin Stevens.

"Mimi battled hard and pulled out a touch second set. I loved her fight as the match went on," Porter said. "Chandler was a rock from the baseline and defended well. So happy to see her earn the clinch crown."

With the victory, the Pirates improve to 3-0 on the season. Southwestern will travel to California next week to face No. 2-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Feb. 22 and No. 1-ranked Caltech on Feb. 23.
