Women's Tennis Wraps Up Second Day at ITA Regionals

ABILENE, Texas — Southwestern University first year Nina Mitrofanova advance to the third and final day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Associations women's regional championships. 

The Pirates set a new program mark with six women advancing to the Round of 16, with Emma Kesterson advancing to the quarterfinals and Mitrofanova getting into the semifinals, defeating Hardin-Simmons' Landry Laywell and UT-Dallas' Suzuka Nishino. 

Kesterson opened the day with a victory over Hardin-Simmons' Kaitlyn Hathorn but lost to No. 2 seed Elisa Kendall of East Texas Baptist. 

Allie Ziehm was defeated by UT-Dallas' Kathy Joseph, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, and Mariana Quezteri took fifth-seeded Zoe Kaffen of Trinity to three sets, winning the first and dropping the next two. Taylor Despriet lost to UT-Dallas' Samantha Wong. 

Ester Bowers was defeated by Nishino before being avenged by Mitrofanova, who will face Kaffen in the semifinals.

In doubles, Bowers and Mitrofanova advanced to the semifinals, defeating UT-Dallas' Nishino and Iyengar before falling to the Kaffen sisters from Trinity University. In the B Draw, Southwestern's Chandler Vrba and Sarah Le were the final two standing and will compete against each other for the championship.
