GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University Pirates women's tennis team returned to its winning ways, sweeping the Colorado College Tigers 9-0 on Thursday.
Southwestern opened the match by sweeping doubles, getting an 8-4 victory from Esther Bowers and Cecile Wilde over Annie Zlevor and Simone Hall in the No. 1 spot. Mary Cardone and Mariana Quetzeri shutdown Tess Rubin and Elise Chassman in the No. 2 spot for an 8-0 win and Nina Elez and Stephanie Bartusov earned an 8-1 win over Lily Salzman and Emily Faulks in the No. 3 spot.
"Steph and Nina played better today," Head Coach Billy Porter said. "They needed that win to get back on track."
Cardone shutdown Rubin with two 6-0 victories in the No. 1 spot in singles while Esther Bowers bested Annie Zlevor in straight sets. Quetzeri returned to the court to win the first set 6-2 and edged out the second 6-4.
"Mariana shook off some rust but managed to find a way to win," Porter said. "I thought she held up well physically."
Elez and Meeshti Shethia earned didn't allow a single point with 6-0, 6-0 victories in the No. 4 and No. 6 spots and Wilde took her match 6-0 and 6-2 in the No. 5 spot.
"Cece was strong and I really liked the way she moved on court today," Porter said.
With the win, the Pirates improved to 13-2 on the season. Southwestern University will host Texas Lutheran tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
