Women's Tennis Sweeps Road Trip Against Ranked Teams

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Southwestern University Pirates women's tennis team defeated its third quality opponent in three days, besting Bates College, which had been in the top 40 in the ITA rankings until March 14, by a score of 6-3.

Southwestern University started the day taking two of the three doubles matches with Esther Bowers and Cecile Wilde defeating Hannah Sweeney and Bella Stone 8-4 in the No. 1 spot, and Mary Cardone and Mariana Quetzeri defeating Isabelle Rovinski and Lauren Hernandez in the second match.

Anna Rozin and Sydney Byrnes put Bates on the scoreboard with an 8-5 victory over Nina Elez and Stephanie Bartusov.

The Pirates regained momentum with Cardone defeating Sweeney in the singles No. 1 match, taking the second set tiebreaker 7-2. Bowers won the No. 2, shutting out Stone to take the match in straight sets. Quetzeri and Rozin also went to a tiebreaker in the second set with Southwestern winning 7-5.

Bates took two of the 4-6 matches with Meeshti Shethtia winning 6-2 and 6-3 for Southwestern in the sixth spot. With the win, Southwestern improves to 11-1 this season. The Pirates will return home to play Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Wednesday, March 27 at 5:00 p.m. and Trinity University on Friday, March 29 against Trinity.
