Pirates Fall Short to Trinity in SCAC Championship Match

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A tough day in doubles proved to be costly as the Southwestern University women's tennis team could never recover, falling to the Trinity University Tigers in the SCAC Championship Match, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Air Force Academy.

In doubles, the Pirates dropped courts one and three by the scores of 8-4 each. In what proved to be a pivotal match, senior Julie Swets and freshman Esther Bowers put together a tremendous effort at court two, but ultimately fell just short, 9-8 (9-7) to give the Tigers the doubles sweep and all the momentum going into singles play.

In singles play, the Tigers were able to take win at one and two to clinch the championship. Junior Anna Schneemann was up a set 7-6 (8-6) at three singles before the match was called while Bowers was also up a set, 6-4, at four singles.

It was a great effort by the Pirates squad, but Southwestern just could not overcome the momentum Trinity gained from doubles.

Southwestern concludes another successful season under Billy Porter at 13-6. The Pirates will say goodbye to four program-changing seniors in Swets, Maranda KahlEmilie Moeller, and Nicole Wilson.
