Pirates Punch Ticket to SCAC Championship Match with Win Over Austin

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - For the third straight season, the Southwestern University women's tennis team will play for a SCAC Championship as they defeated the Austin College 'Roos in the semifinals, 5-0, on Saturday evening at the Air Force Academy.

The Pirates really set the momentum early on thanks to huge victories in doubles, winning all three highly competitive matches. Senior Julie Swets and freshman Esther Bowers got it started with an 8-6 win at two doubles followed by another 8-6 win at three doubles by seniors Nicole Wilson and Maranda Kahl.

Junior Anna Schneemann and sophomore Mary Cardone complete the sweep with a 9-7 victory at one doubles to give the Pirates a 3-0 lead.

In singles, Bowers got it rolling by cruising to a 6-2, 6-2 win at four singles while Schneemann clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win at three singles. Junior Taite Drews-Jones had a commanding 6-4, 5-1 lead at two singles before the match was clinched while Cardone was already a set up at one singles.

Southwestern moves to 13-5 overall on the season. The Pirates will take on Trinity for the third straight year in the finals and will look to pick up their first conference title. The Pirates and Tigers will go to battled at 9:30 AM at the Air Force Academy.
