No. 26 Pirates Earn Road Win Over Texas Lutheran

SEGUIN, Texas - The 26th-ranekd Southwestern University women's tennis team earned an 8-1 win over the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs on Thursday afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Courts in Seguin.

The Pirates got it rolling early on with dominant three wins at doubles. Sophomore Mary Cardone and junior Anna Schneemann earned an 8-0 win at one doubles while freshman Esther Bowers and senior Julie Swets were victorious at two doubles, 8-1. Seniors Nicole Wilson and Maranda Kahl wrapped the doubles sweep up, carrying the momentum to singles, with an 8-2 win at three doubles.

"Maranda's movement in doubles was fantastic," said Head Coach Billy Porter. "She was all over the net the entire match."

In singles, freshman Mariana Quetzeri continued her outstanding play at singles, winning her third match in a row and moving to 7-3, with a 6-0, 6-0 win at five singles. Cardone followed that up by clinching the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win at one singles.

"Mary was lights out today and had tremendous patience all day long," said Porter. "Mariana continues to play solid tennis and that is what we need at the bottom of our lineup."

In other singles action, Bowers earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at four singles while junior Taite Drews-Jones picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win at two singles. Schneemann also earned a 6-4, 6-0 win at three singles.

Southwestern moves to 8-4 overall and will take the weekend off for Easter Break. They return to action on Saturday, April 7th as they welcome in Hardin-Simmons at 10 AM followed by Schreiner at 4 PM.
