No. 23 Pirates Return to Texas with Win Over Howard Payne

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The 23rd-ranked Southwestern University women's tennis team returned to their home state of Texas and got back to their winning ways, defeating Howard Payne on the road in a dominating 9-0 victory.

"Good overall team win and nice to get back in the win column as we needed it," said Head Coach Billy Porter.

The team of sophomore Mary Cardone and junior Anna Schneemann got things rolling with an 8-0 win at one doubles followed by an 8-2 win by seniors Julie Swets and Emilie Moeller at three doubles. Seniors Nicole Wilson and Maranda Kahl wrapped up doubles with an 8-3 win at two doubles.

Schneemann got singles action started with a 6-1, 6-0 win at court two while Cardone clinched the win with a 6-0, 6-0 win at one singles. Freshman Mariana Quetzeri earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at three singles while sophomore Cecile Wilde won 6-1, 6-0 at four singles.

The Pirates wrapped up the win at five and six singles as senior Emilie Moeller was victorious 6-0, 6-1 at court six while sophomore Stephanie Bartusov earned a 6-2, 6-4 win at court five.

"Emilie played real solid today and her serving was incredible," said Porter. "It was great to have Stephanie back in match play. She worked her way through some things."

Southwestern will return to action tomorrow evening as they finally return home, joining the men in taking on LeTourneau beginning at 5 PM.
