No. 24 Southwestern Falls to No. 3 CMS

GEORGETOWN - #3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps lived up to their ranking as Southwestern dropped the contest 8-1 Friday afternoon. 

"There is no doubt that this match opened our eyes and will help us be more prepared for late April tennis," said Head Coach Billy Porter after taking on one of the top teams in the nation.

Nicole Wilson and Maranda Kahl got the only win of the evening for the Pirates, winning 8-6 at #3 doubles. Mary Cardone and Anna Schneeman fell 8-0 in #1 doubles and Esther Bowers and Julie Swets lost 8-2 at #2. 

"Nicole and Maranda remained composed coming down from 1-6 to take it  8-6," said Porter. "That swing gave us a huge shot of energy going into singles"

In singles play CMS won all the matches in straight sets. Cardone dropped her match 6-2, 7-6 in #1 singles, Drews Jones lost 6-2, 7-5 at #2 and Schneemann fell 6-1, 6-2 at the #3 slot. In #4 singles Bowers was bested 6-3, 6-3, Mariana Quetzeri fell 6-2, 6-2 at #5 singles and Cecile Wilde dropped her #6 singles match 6-0, 6-2. 

"The fight the girls had in them tonight was what makes this team special," said Porter. "CMS was a more talented team but we played fearless and battled to the last point"

Southwestern remains at home to face #35 Redlands Saturday afternoon. Matches are set to start at 4 pm.
