No Trouble for Pirate Women in Sweep of Concordia

GEORGETOWN - After weeks of trying to get a match together, the 24th-ranked Southwestern University women's tennis team and Concordia finally got on the hard court and were able to play a match with the Pirates cruising to a 9-0 win on Tuesday evening.

"This was hands down the best energy we had from a support and cheering standpoint which has been a focal point all season," said Head Coach Billy Porter.

That was evident early on in doubles as the Pirates cruised to three points. Freshman Esther Bowers and senior Julie Swets led things off with a win at No. 2 doubles, 8-3, while sophomore Mary Cardone and junior Anna Schneemann picked up where the left off from, earning an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. 

Senior Nicole Wilson and Maranda Kahl were not far behind as they completed the sweep with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles.

"We adapted well to the lineup changes at all three doubles spots, starting off a bit slow, but progressively picking our game up the longer the matches went," said Porter.

In singles, Bowers led it off with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles while Schneemann, the reigning SCAC Player of the Week, clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.

Cardone was victorious at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2, while junior Taite Drews-Jones earned a tough victory at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-2.

"Taite battled adversity well and found a way to keep her composure working hand in hand with Coach Miller to get to the finish line," added Coach Porter.

The Pirates wrapped up the sweep with Swets earning a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles and freshman Mariana Quetzeri winning at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-4.

Southwestern moves to 4-1 overall and will continue their four game home-stretch on Friday with a stiff test, welcoming in No. 3 team in the nation in Claremont-Mudd-Scripps beginning at 4 PM.
