No. 24 Pirates Sweep Past UT-Permian Basin

GEORGETOWN - The 24th-ranked Southwestern Univesity women's tennis team saw their match with UT-Permian Basin moved up from Saturday morning to Friday evening, but showed no problems as they swept the Falcons, earning a 9-0 win at the Henderson Courts.

The Pirates got things started at doubles where the No. 3 team of senior Nicole Wilson and sophomore Cecile Wilde earned a 8-4 win. Senior Maranda Kahl and freshman Esther Bowers earned an 8-5 win at No. 1 followed by an 8-3 with by junior Anna Schneemann and sophomore Mary Cardone at No. 2 doubles to complete the doubles sweep.

"Maranda and Esther did an outstanding job of battling back from 1-3 down to get the second doubles point," said Head Coach Billy Porter. 
 
In singles, Cardone got things rolling with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles while Bowers clinched the match at No. 4 with a 7-5, 6-3 win. Schneemann was victorious 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles while Wilde earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles.
 
"Cecile and Anna's energy was outstanding and fed off of each other," added Porter.
 
Southwestern closed the match out with a win at No. 1 singles by junior Taite Drews-Jones while Wilson closed things out with an exciting three set victory at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 5-7, 11-9.
 
"Taite played composed and got a nice win giving Nicole a boost to get the 9th point," said Porter. "Nicole was fantastic tonight battling through some pain to pull it out and complete the sweep."
 
Southwestern goes to 2-1 on the season as the men will battle the Falcons tomorrow morning. The women's next match will come on Wednesday as they will make up the postponed match against Concordia (TX) from earlier this week. First serve is set for 5 PM.
