24th-Ranked Pirates Cruise Past Sul Ross in Home Opener

GEORGETOWN - The 24th-ranked Southwestern University women's tennis team had no trouble with Sul Ross State in their home opener on Thursday evening, sweeping the Lobos 9-0 at the Marvin D. Henderson, Sr. Tennis Courts.

The team of senior Maranda Kahl and freshman Esther Bowers took the court together for the first time as a doubles team and cruised at No. 1 doubles to an 8-2 win. 

"Very happy to see the new team of Maranda and Esther play as well as they did as we put them together two days ago," said Head Coach Billy Porter.
 
Junior Anna Schneemann and sophomore Mary Cardone earned an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles while seniors Nicole Wilson and Julie Swets were vicorious at No. 3 doubles by the score of 8-1 as Southwestern earned the doubles sweep.
 
The Pirates continued their domination into singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets. Cardone, freshman Mariana Quetzeri, and sophomore Stephanie Bartusov all earned 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 2, No. 5, and No. 6 singles.
 
Schneemann and Bowers took 6-1, 6-0 victories at No. 3 and No. 4 singles while junior Taite Drews-Jones won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-2. 
 
"Mary (Cardone) looked outstanding tonight playing more comfortable as the match progressed," said Porter. "Stephanie (Bartusov) was strong from the backhand side tonight mixing it up with some finesse to her game."
 
The Pirates played strong tennis all evening and moved to 1-1 overall as a result of their play. They will head to the Louisiana/Texas border beginning on Saturday at they will begin the day against LSU-Shreveport at 10 AM followed by a 4 PM match-up at Texas-Tyler.
