Women's Tennis Opens Fall Season with Strong Showing at SU Quad

GEORGETOWN - The Southwestern University women's tennis team opened up the 2017 fall season by welcoming in Trinity University, St. Edward's, and Texas A&M-Kingsville for the SU Quad at Martin D. Henderson Courts throughout the weekend.

The Pirates had a strong showing throughout the weekend, getting great performances from numerous players.

On Friday against TAMUK, freshman Kate Daugherty defeated Victoria Romanovskaya at No. 2 singles by the score of 6-0, 6-3. Sophomore Cecile Wilde added a win at No. 7 singles by defeating Viviana Ortiz by the score of 6-4, 6-2.

In doubles, SU got three wins as freshman Esther Bowers and Daugherty earned a 9-8 win at No. 1 while Schneemann and senior Maranda Kahl were victorious at No. 2 doubles, 8-4. Seniors Emilie Moeller and Julie Swets won at No. 4 doubles, 8-3.

Later that day against Trinity, SU was dominant throughout the day. Junior Taite Drew-Jones won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles over Zoe Kaffen, while junior Anna Schneemann lost a 6-4, 6-4 match at No. 4 singles to Paulina Garcia. Wilde and Moeller each were winners at No. 7 and No. 8 singles, winning 6-3, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-1, respectively.

Three matches went to a third set with the Pirates victorious in two. Daugherty earned a 6-0, 4-6, 10-8 win at No. 2 singles over Mary Kaffen while senior Nicole Wilson came-from-behind, winning 5-7, 6-2, 10-6 over Hanna Rafferty.

In doubles, Bowers and Daugherty earned an 8-5 win at No. 1 while Schneemann and Kahl were dominant at No. 2 doubles with an 8-1 win. Moeller and Swets earned an 8-5 win at No. 4 doubles.

Against a tough St. Edward's squad on Saturday, Daugherty earned another win, 6-4, 6-3, over Beth Hayward at No. 2 singles. Wilde and Swets were victorious at No. 7 and no. 8 singles by the score of 7-5, 6-2 and 7-5, 6-2.

The women will return to action next weekend as they head to Tyler, Texas for three day ITA Regionals beginning on Friday at 8 AM.
