Cardone tabbed SCAC Player, Newcomer of the Year

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Southwestern University first-year Mary Cardone headlined the All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) teams, which were released on Monday. The first-year was one of four Pirates honored, as she captured both SCAC Player and Newcomer of the Year honors.

Joining Cardone on the All-SCAC team were Taite Drews-Jones and Anna Schneemann, while Nicole Wilson garnered honorable mention.

Cardone, a native of San Antonio, becomes one of the few female student-athletes in conference history to earn a superlative award in two different sports over one academic year. She also was named SCAC Newcomer of the Year in women's soccer last fall.

Cardone competed only during the spring season, racking up a 20-0 record in singles play, including a 9-0 mark at the top flight. She also netted a 19-4 ledger on the doubles courts. Cardone, who is the first player in program history to earn the league's top honor, won all 20 of her singles matchups in straight sets and was named SCAC Player of the Week four times.

Drews-Jones, a sophomore from Minneapolis, tallied a total of 18 victories during the year. She posted a 13-6 mark in singles competition and a 5-0 record in doubles play. Drews-Jones, who earned SCAC Newcomer of the Year last spring, also was named SCAC Player of the Week three times.

Schneemann, a sophomore out of San Angelo, picked up all-league honors after compiling a 12-4 record on the singles courts. She teamed up with Cardone for a 16-4 mark at No. 1 doubles. Schneemann was named SCAC Player of the Week on April 18.

Wilson, who hails from Highland Village, was rewarded with honorable-mention All-SCAC honors following a strong spring campaign. She tallied a 10-3 record in singles competition. Additionally, the junior teamed up with Maranda Kahl to log a 20-3 mark at No. 3 doubles.

Southwestern finished the 2017 campaign with a 20-3 record. The Pirates achieved the program's first-ever national ranking, currently sitting at No. 28, and advanced to the SCAC Championship match for the second straight season.
