Cardone named SCAC Player of the Week for fourth time this spring

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Southwestern University first-year Mary Cardone was named Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the fourth time this spring, the league office announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Cardone, who also earned the honor on March 14 and 28 and April 4, remained unbeaten in singles play, pushing her record to 19-0 this season. The San Antonio native defeated Trinity's Liza Southwick in straight sets (7-5, 6-4) at the top singles spot last Friday. Southwick is ranked 29th in the nation for her singles play and seventh in the region.

Cardone and the rest of the Pirates (19-2) will compete in the SCAC Championships April 29-30 in San Antonio. Southwestern captured the league's No. 2 seed and will play the winner of No. 3 seed Colorado College and sixth-seeded Texas Lutheran in the semifinals at 9 a.m. Saturday.
