Drews-Jones, Porter capture superlative SCAC awards on Wednesday

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Taite Drews-Jones was named Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year, while Billy Porter was tabbed Coach of the Year, as the league announced its postseason honors on Wednesday.

Drews-Jones, who became the first player in program history to be named league newcomer of the year, and Anna Schneemann landed on the all-conference team, while Maranda Kahl, Jessey Martinez and Nicole Wilson were honorable mention.

Porter, who also earned conference coach of the year accolades on the men's side last season, guided Southwestern to a 21-5 record and the program's first-ever appearance in the SCAC Championship Match.

Drews-Jones, a first-year player from Minneapolis, posted a 14-4 record between the top two singles positions, including a 12-4 mark at the top spot. Drews-Jones, who was ranked 12th in the latest ITA West Region Rankings for singles play, also teamed up with Martinez for a 17-4 ledger in doubles competition.

Schneemann, a first-year player from San Angelo, led the Pirates with a 17-5 mark in singles competition, including a 14-3 record at the second spot.

Kahl, a sophomore from Sherman, won her final 11 singles matches en route to a 13-2 overall record. Additionally, she and Wilson teamed up in doubles action for a 21-3 ledger.

Martinez, a first-year player from Junction, registered a 12-7 record between the third, fourth and fifth singles positions.

Wilson, a sophomore from Highland Village, finished second on the squad with 16-5 mark in singles play.

Additionally, Kahl, Schneemann, Wilson and Emilie Moeller were named to the SCAC All-Tournament Team.
